'England' the heart of United Kingdom and the place where English evolved from the Anglo-Saxon dialect.
In the history of this land only twice it had been conquered successfully, once by the Mighty Rome. The Second was by William the Conqueror, the then Duke of Normandy. Now William's descendants control some parts of France as Dukes and rule the Kingdom of England. You can ask what the difference between a Duke and a King. Duke is not a King, but a subordinate to him, who will rule the king's land on the behalf of the King. Now the Dukes of Normandy will be simultaneously be the Kings of England.
By more than 200 years of alliances and royal marriages, the English King gained the control of a large part of France. The ruling family of England in 13th century, the Plantagenets, controlled most of the French territory and rivaled the French kingdom's ruling family, the Valois, in both power and wealth.
The Valoi kings wanted to eradicate the English rulers from controlling territories in France. The Valois banned trade between the England and the France. So, the then King Edward III of England waged a war on France claiming the French throne. This war is known to the world as the hundred years war. Though the war has took place in a series of conflicts and had some periods of peace between those conflicts, this century of war had devastating impacts on both sides. It was very close that many times the English had nearly won the war. Ultimately, they lost. All the English territories in France was lost.
But this war played an important role in the making of English Identity. It was during this war, the language of English became the official language of England. During this time the House of Commons was created (which would latter become its Parliament). This war defined what England was and who English were.
Though they could have lost all their last lands in the continental Europe. This would pave the way for a Great Colonial Empire. The largest Empire ever known to the Mankind.
